I'm No Superman

Let's talk about someone worthy of a notable mention, Zach Braff. Many of us are familiar with the character, Dr. John Dorian, Braff plays on the popular television series Scrubs created by Bill Lawrence. This is basically where Braff got a majority of his recognition for this fun loving quirky character. Scrubs gained 17 Emmy nominations during it's run from 2001 to 2010 such as best casting, best cinematography, best directing, best editing, and best writing. Zach Braff was also nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, all in all Braff had created his own personal empire and gained tons of praise for his roll simply on Scrubs.

What many people don't know is Zach Braff also directed several episodes of Scrubs including the 100th episode titled "My Way Home". Along with his talents in acting and directing television during this time he decided to take it a step further by announcing his directorial debut for his film Garden State in 2004. The film was shot in his home state of New Jersey and had a budget of about $2.5 million. The film made over $35 million in the box office, overall...a success. Braff wrote the script in 6 months for the film and initially producers weren't all in for the financing of this film but with a little persuasion on Braff's behalf the film happened. In February of 2005 Garden State won a Grammy for Best Compilation Soundtrack.

If you have yet to see this film I highly recommend you go out and watch it. It was the most beautifully made film I've seen in awhile and touched on every emotional chord. Braff describes it as a "coming of age film for twentysomethings" and was worth every minute I spent watching it. Zach Braff definitely has a gift for film making.

His newest project in the making is a film titled Open Hearts which he will be directing and is expected to come out sometime in 2011. The film is a remake of the 2002 Danish film with the same title. I have every upmost expectation of this film to be another Zach Braff classic, best of luck to him!

  1. Great post, I loved Scrubs! Though the show went downhill in the later seasons, I loved watching it and there were so many funny moments on the show.

Garden State is one of my all-time favorite movies and I liked the other one he was in "The Last Kiss". He was in some smaller movies too that look pretty interesting. Can't wait for his new movie!
