Whip It

We all remember Drew Barrymore from films such as E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, Charlie's Angels, Never Been Kissed, and even from the popular television show Family Guy (she is the voice of Brian's girlfriend Jillian). Well she has only continued to wow everyone in the Entertainment industry with her determination and dedication to the quality of a film and what makes a good film indeed that, a good film. Drew Barrymore had her Directorial debut in 2009 with her film Whip It. The film stars Ellen Page who plays an outcast named Bliss Cavender in small town Bodeen, Texas who stumbles across a roller derby team based out of Austin, Texas. Taking place in the 1990s it follows Bliss on her adventure in becoming part of the roller derby team The Hurl Scouts. Shauna Cross wrote the screen play for the film based on her novel Derby Girl written in 2007. Whip It was a critical success but unfortunately fell short in the box office coming in at #6 with $4,650,812 in it's opening weekend. Despite it's lack in the box office I still stand by this film as a must-see as soon as possible. Being a film major myself I can say I've seen a variety of films from all over the world and it's been awhile since I came across a film like Whip It. The soundtrack alone went so well with every scene making the continuity of the film flow so smoothly and beautifully that I hunted down the soundtrack at a local Best Buy and bought it. Bottom line is, if you're a sucker for a good cult classic and enjoy the magic of what indie music has to bring to the table along with some kick ass roller derby entertainment then this is the movie for you. My compliments go out to Drew for her incredibly Directing skills making this film what it is and worth sharing with everyone who has yet to experience the magic.
